A Study in 2 Timothy: Will you stand for Him and be a defender of the Faith?

Scripture Lesson of the Day:  2 Timothy 3:10-15, NLT

A Defender of the Faith…

Has (a) godly mentor(s)!

“Now you have closely observed and diligently followed my teaching, conduct, purpose in life, faith, patience, love, steadfastness, Persecutions, sufferings–such as occurred to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra, persecutions I endured, but out of them all the Lord delivered me” (2 Timothy 3:10-11, Amplified Bible).

A godly mentor:
1. Teaches the truth. “But you have carefully followed my doctrine” (v. 10a, NKJV).
2.  Has nothing to hide.  “You know my way of life” (v. 10a, NIV).
3.  Lives what they teach and preach. “But you, Timothy, certainly know… what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance” (v. 10, NLT).

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1, NIV).

“So I urge you to imitate me. That’s why I have sent Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord. He will remind you of how I follow Christ Jesus, just as I teach in all the churches wherever I go” (1 Corinthians 4:16-17, NLT).

Whose example are you imitating?  Is it a godly or worldly example?

Experiences suffering and persecution!

“You know how much persecution and suffering I have endured. You know all about how I was persecuted in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra—but the Lord rescued me from all of it. Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution” (2 Timothy 3:11-12, NLT).

“Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you” (John 15:20, NLT).

Have you ever experienced suffering or persecution for being a Christian?

“So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord. As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece—throughout both Macedonia and Achaia.” (1 Thessalonians 1:6-7, NLT).

Answers the challenge to be faithful to the truth of the gospel!

“But evil people and impostors will flourish. They will deceive others and will themselves be deceived. But you must remain faithful to the things you have been taught. You know they are true, for you know you can trust those who taught you. You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:13-15, NLT).

“Do your best to win God’s approval as a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed and who teaches only the true message” (2 Timothy 2:15, CEV).
