The S7GNS: Do You Want to Get Well?

Scripture Lesson for the Day: John 5:1-18, NLT

“The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name” (John 20:30-31, NLT).

This miraculous sign will lead you to ask yourself…
1. Do you want to get well?
“Crowds of sick people—blind, lame, or paralyzed—lay on the porches. One of the men lying there had been sick for thirty-eight years. When Jesus saw him and knew he had been ill for a long time, he asked him, ‘Would you like to get well?’” (John 5:3-6, NLT)

2. Do you realize that you are in desperate need for help?
“‘I can’t, sir,’ the sick man said, ‘for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me’” (John 5:7, NLT).

Jesus points to a deeper healing that is needed: “Later, Jesus found the man at the Temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well now. Stop sinning so that something worse does not happen to you’” (John 5:14, NCV).

True or False: Until we get to the place that we realize our desperate condition we will never know who Jesus really is!

Have you experienced the deeper spiritual healing that Jesus desires for you?

3. Do you recognize Jesus for who He really is?
“The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of rest—a holy day. Jesus replied to them, ‘My Father is working right now, and so am I.’ His reply made the Jews more intent on killing him. Not only did he break the laws about the day of rest—a holy day, but also he made himself equal to God when he said repeatedly that God was his Father” (John 5:16-18, GW).

Jesus is showing us that He is…

  • The Initiator: Jesus seeks us out and desires to make us whole!
  • The Healer: Jesus is our physical and spiritual healer!
  • The Savior: He is the only one that can truly bring the healing that we need!

Key Understanding: Jesus confronted the healed lame man with a deeper and much more important problem in his life. It was his sin sick soul that needed to be healed. Jesus is our only remedy for this spiritual sickness!

Closing Challenge: “Would you like to get well?” Look to Jesus and nothing else for the healing that you need and He desires for you!
