Scripture Lesson for the day: 1 Corinthians 6:9-20, NLT & selected passages in the Bible
Do you know that every member of your family is in a spiritual battle for sexual purity?
To win the battle for sexual purity…
- Put on your running shoes!
“Run from sexual sin!” (1 Corinthians 6:18a, NLT).
“His master’s wife grabbed his coat and said to him, ‘Come and have sexual relations with me.’ But Joseph left his coat in her hand and ran out of the house” (Genesis 39:12, NCV).
- Learn to bounce your eyes!
“You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28, NLT).
What was King David’s major mistake when he first saw Bathsheba?
“One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of his palace. While he was on the roof, he saw a woman bathing. She was very beautiful. So David sent his servants to find out who she was. A servant answered, ‘That woman is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam. She is the wife of Uriah the Hittite.’ So David sent messengers to bring Bathsheba to him. When she came to him, he had sexual relations with her” (2 Samuel 11:2-4, NCV).
How would you respond to a man who said, “I always thought that since I was a man I would not be able to control my roving eyes? I didn’t know it could be any other way?”
- Maintain safe boundaries!
“…you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:13b, NLT).
“God wants you to be holy and to stay away from sexual sins. He wants each of you to learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable. Don’t use your body for sexual sin like the people who do not know God” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, NCV).
“Life is short. Have an affair” (Ashely Madison slogan).
“People who sin sexually sin against their own bodies. Don’t you know that your body is a temple that belongs to the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit, whom you received from God, lives in you. You don’t belong to yourselves. You were bought for a price. So bring glory to God in the way you use your body” (1 Corinthians 6:18b-20, GW).
- Save yourself for marriage!
“But if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It’s better to marry than to burn with lust” (1 Corinthians 7:9, NLT).
“However, if you cannot control your desires, you should get married. It is better for you to marry than to burn with sexual desire” (Hebrews 13:4, GW).
“When you talk to courageous World War II veterans, they say they don’t feel like heroes. They simply had a job to do. When the landing-craft ramps fell open, they swallowed hard and said, ‘It’s time.’ Time to fight. In your struggle with sexual impurity, isn’t it time? Sure, fighting back will be hard. But your life and home are under a withering barrage of machine-gun sexuality that rakes the landscape mercilessly. Right now you’re in a landing craft, inching closer to shore and a showdown. God has given you the weapons and trained you for battle. You can’t stay in the landing craft forever” (Every Man’s Battle, chp. 8, pgs. 83-84).
