Home Team: Parenting…Are you up to the challenge?
Scripture Lesson for the Day: Deuteronomy 6:6-7 and selected passages in the Bible
Cornerstone Text: “And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today” (Deuteronomy 6:6, NLT).
Can you name some children in the Bible that were a challenge for their parents?
You can answer the parenting challenge by…
- Modeling appropriate behavior and discipling your child!
“…you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again”(Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NLT).
Does your home communicate anything about your faith?
“He continued to sin just like his father before him…” (1 Kings 15:3, the Message)
Key Understanding: We can teach what we know, but we reproduce what we are.
- Constantly praying for your child!
- Pray for Godly influencers in your child’s life.
“He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm” (Proverbs 13:20, NIV).
- Pray for hedges with thorns surrounding your child’s lives.
“But I will fence her in with briars and thornbushes” (Hosea 2:6, TLB).
“Physical punishment cleanses away evil; such discipline purifies the heart”
(Proverbs 20:30, NLT).
Agree or Disagree: Don’t withhold consequences from your children; let them get caught and suffer the penalty for their actions.
“Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil” (Ecclesiastes. 8:11, NKJV).
“God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life”(John 3:16, NCV).
The 3:16 parenting method includes…
- Teaching your child how much God loves them. (1 John 4:9-10)
“God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son”
- Teaching your child that God has a life long mission for them.
(2 Corinthians 5:14-15, 20)
“…so that whoever believes in him may not be lost”
- Teaching your child that they can possess eternal life. (1 John 5:13)
“…so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life”
Closing Challenge: Parent’s are you up to the challenge? You are more of an influence than you can ever imagine. Just keep being a godly model of Jesus in your home. Keep investing yourselves into your children’s lives. And keep your focus on what God is calling you to do. Remember that the ultimate goal is your child’s salvation!
