A Savior is Born to You: A Lord for Your Present!

Scripture Lesson for the Day:  Luke 2:1-11

Cornerstone Text:  “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11, NIV).

What did the Angel mean when he called Jesus, “Christ the Lord,” on that Christmas morning two thousand years ago?

Jesus is Lord of your present because…

  • He is the Creator, Owner and Master of all that exists! (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:15-17; Matthew 20:8; Mark 13:35)

  • He is the ultimate voice of authority!  (Hebrews 1:1-4)

“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me’” (Matthew 28:18).

    • Jesus is the ultimate voice of authority over nature.  (Luke 8:22-25)
    • Jesus is the ultimate voice of authority over diseases and disabilities. (Luke 5:12-26)
    • Jesus is the ultimate voice of authority over life and death. (Luke 7:11-17)
    • Jesus is the ultimate voice of authority when it comes to your salvation

(John 5:19-30)

  • He possesses the highest title possible!

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father”

(Philippians 2:10-11, NIV).

Two key understandings of this title given to Jesus:

  • As our Lord Jesus identifies himself as God!

“Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’”  (John 20:28, NIV).

  • As our Lord Jesus desires to have a relationship with us!

“‘Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.’  When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’”

(Acts 2:36-37, NIV)

“That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved…for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved’” (Romans 10:9, 13, NIV).

Closing Challenge:  How should I respond to Jesus as Lord?  The Magi in the Christmas story demonstrated the proper response, “On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him” (Matthew 2:11).  This Christmas Season and throughout the year may we do the same!
